OSGS
Old Stationers' Golf Society - 2007 Programme

2008 Season
Things are now organised for the 2008 Season, and Peter Bonner has sent me details for those who are interested in getting involved. To read the following, you will need to download and run Adobe Acrobat's Reader program from http://www.adobecrobat.info/uk/ if you haven't already installed this; it is free to download. Why did I use Adobe Acrobat? There are two problems that not using this would involve - the first is that not everyone is Microsoft's Windows - and secondly even if they are they may be using different screen resolutions. The documents include forms which may be distorted by either of these facts, and Acrobat will ensure that both these matters are taken care of. If anyone has any queries with regard to this, please use our feedback page.
Breaking News: Roger Engledow (Pictured with OSA President, Peter Bonner)) beat of stiff competition from Dave Sheath and Alan Hudson to win the The Old Stationers Golf
Society Shield at Pinner Hill on September 17th. The trophy is awarded to the member with the best combined total from two out of three fixtures. Click here for a picture.

Print the documentation, complete the form and post it to Peter; the remainder of the documentation will act as your reminder of the event(s).

END OF TERM REPORT

The season concludes on Thursday 25th October with a team event at Brookmans Park GC. This event is a traditional one organised by the Old Owens GS and is a fine conclusion to the season. Since the 'half term' report we have played at Pinner Hill, Crews Hill and Barnham Broom. The Pinner Hill event in August was excellent, a fine course with excellent catering, although a touch expensive. The winner for the day - an event, which counts towards the trophy, was Tim Westbrook. Sadly, the leading contender for the trophy and current holder, Tony Taylor, could not make the event so the trophy decider was at Crews Hill in September. This proved to be a tougher course than expected and was won by one of our newer members - Colin Walker. The final standings for the trophy were:

1. Tim Westbrook 75 points (36 + 39)
2. Tony Taylor 72 points
3. Colin Walker 71 points

Our congratulations go to Tim for his consistent good form.

We were amazingly blessed with fine weather on every day we played this year - strange when it was such a wet summer!

On 14th and 15th October, some nine members (including one Old Owen) and four wives spent an enjoyable couple of days at Barnham Broom in Norfolk. The deal negotiated, which included two rounds of golf (two courses), dinner, bed and breakfast of £72 per head (sharing) was exceptional and the overall winner was - the Old Owen! - with Tony Taylor as runner-up. Following this success we plan to have a similar trip next year.

The Society continues to thrive and some of the changes introduced this year were successful i.e. Day Captains to relieve the Secretary of some of the workload on the day, late morning starts and the best two of three rounds to count towards the trophy (recently refurbished) and subject to agreement these will be continued next year.

We currently have twenty-four paid up members - a token £10 p.a. to pay for administration costs and prizes. At most meetings we attract around 20 members and a number of Old Owens. The July and September events attract the fewest players as many people are away to avoid children's holidays.

In admin. terms we have suffered from persistent email problems and probably need to switch internet service provider to ensure a better service. Equally there are a number of people on snail mail who are sent details of every event but never join or reply. It is proposed to delete these to save costs and time.

Shortly a questionnaire will be sent to members, asking for recommended course for 2008. Already 'The Shires' at Barnet look interesting and there have been several requests to return to Mill Green.

With apologies to Mark Twain, I hope to see many of you 'spoil a good walk' in 2008.

Peter Bonner
OSGS Secretary

Peter has now provided me with the 2008 programme of venues, as follows:

Time to think of the year ahead. There is an end of term report on the Golf Society in the Magazine, so I won’t repeat it.

Below are the course I am planning for 2008. Comments welcome.

April Bushey Hall GC (near Watford)
May Mill Green GC* (v Old Owens)
Early July The Shires (the new Seve Ballesteros course)
Early August Essendon (London Golf and Country Club)
September Pinner Hill GC (by popular demand)
October Brookmans Park GC (Teams)

Additional to the above, a Sunday/Monday break can be arranged in late August at Farthingstone (Northants) with two rounds of golf, dinner, bed and breakfast (sharing a twin) for £89.

Could you comment on above by 19th January and I will book a programme and advise by end January.

Happy New Year.

Peter

Secretary

* This venue has been especially requested by OOGS as they are likely to get more players at this venue. The showers are now repaired! And I will talk to them about better catering.
