2008 Season
END OF TERM REPORT
The season concluded on Thursday 25th October with a team event at Brookmans Park GC. This event is a traditional one organised by the Old Owens GS and is a fine conclusion to the season. Since the 'half term' report we have played at Pinner Hill, Crews Hill and Barnham Broom. The Pinner Hill event in August was excellent, a fine course with excellent catering, although a touch expensive. The winner for the day - an event, which counts towards the trophy, was Tim Westbrook. Sadly, the leading contender for the trophy and current holder, Tony Taylor, could not make the event so the trophy decider was at Crews Hill in September. This proved to be a tougher course than expected and was won by one of our newer members - Colin Walker. The final standings for the trophy were:
1. Tim Westbrook 75 points (36 + 39)
2. Tony Taylor 72 points
3. Colin Walker 71 points
Our congratulations go to Tim for his consistent good form. We were amazingly blessed with fine weather on every day we played this year - strange when it was such a wet summer!
On 14th and 15th October, some nine members (including one Old Owen) and four wives spent an enjoyable couple of days at Barnham Broom in Norfolk. The deal negotiated, which included two rounds of golf (two courses), dinner, bed and breakfast of £72 per head (sharing) was exceptional and the overall winner was - the Old Owen! - with Tony Taylor as runner-up. Following this success we plan to have a similar trip next year.
The Society continues to thrive and some of the changes introduced this year were successful i.e. Day Captains to relieve the Secretary of some of the workload on the day, late morning starts and the best two of three rounds to count towards the trophy (recently refurbished) and subject to agreement these will be continued next year.
We currently have twenty-four paid up members - a token £10 p.a. to pay for administration costs and prizes. At most meetings we attract around 20 members and a number of Old Owens. The July and September events attract the fewest players as many people are away to avoid children's holidays.
In admin. terms we have suffered from persistent email problems and probably need to switch our internet service provider to ensure a better service. Equally there are a number of people on snail mail who are sent details of every event but never join or reply. It is proposed to delete these to save costs and time.
Shortly a questionnaire will be sent to members, asking for recommended course for 2008. Already 'The Shires' at Barnet look interesting and there have been several requests to return to Mill Green.
With apologies to Mark Twain, I hope to see many of you 'spoil a good walk' in 2009.
Peter Bonner
OSGS Secretary
