President’s Day 2019 cricket victory

On a glorious Bank Holiday Sunday at Botany Bay cricket club, The Presidents Select X1 prevailed in a hard fought match against the home side.
The event was well attended and those present were fortunate enough to witness two records being broken; the hottest August Bank Holiday in living memory and the longest over ever bowled!
Winning the toss Richard Slatford opted to bat and after losing two quick wickets, Richard and Colin Lane crafted a steady run-fest scoring 72 and 61 respectively before retiring to let a couple of our less talented players swing and miss for the last of our allotted 35 overs. Our total of 165 for 5 proved a challenging target for Botany Bay after Munro dismissed their opener for 4 and Westbrook bowled their number 3 for 2 runs. Blackmore, Soames, French, Brown, and Lane bowled tidily to restrict Botany Bay scoring and with one over to go, our captain in a moment of madness tossed the ball to Hudson. His final over plumbed the depths of collective embarrassment with a mixture of “wides”, “scuttlers” and several “dribblers” that did not reach the other end, all contributing to a 21 ball over that took a full 12 minutes to complete and added another 31 to their innings total before we could all adjourn to the bar to celebrate a famous victory for Peter Thomas’s illustrious team.
Many thanks to Peter Thomas for hosting the event and to JJ of Botany Bay for all the domestic arrangements at the venue.
